Egypt is taking part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games with a whopping delegation of 134 athletes from 23 sports federations. This is the highest participation in the history of Egypt in the Olympic Games.
The 23 sports include Modern Pentathlon, Swimming & Diving, table-tennis, Fencing, Tennis, Wrestling, Canoe, Gymnastics, Rowing, Sailing, Equestrian, Football, Handball, Archery, Boxing, Athletics, Judo, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Cycling, Karate, Badminton and Shooting.
According to Sharif El-Erian, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, Egypt has already received the accreditation cards of the delegation which resembles the visa entry of the delegation to Tokyo.
El-Erian, also President of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation told the media that the NOC is aiming to accomplish medals during their participation in the 2020 Olympic Games, scheduled to be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo.
"Egypt will be taking part at the Tokyo Olympic Games with a 250-man delegation, both officials and athletes, since we have been qualified in 23 sports," El-Erian said.

"We have some players who are really promising athletes and ranked among the top athletes in their sports, like Taekwondo, Karate, Modern Pentathlon, Wrestling, and Handball. Therefore, we have high hopes and expectations to achieve medals, but there are no guarantees; in sports, you always either win or lose. We’ll just do our best to achieve the best results," the Egyptian Olympic Committee Secretary-General said.
On the other hand, the head of the NOC medical committee, Dr. Hassan Kamal declared some good news two weeks before traveling to the Olympics when the NOC received an official letter from the organizers informing them about the latest procedures regarding the Covid 19 precautions.
“The IOC has divided the nations into two categories, with each category having specific measures according to the medical, health and safety situation in each country. Many countries including England and the UAE will submit to strict measures.

“On 8 July, the IOC informed the Egyptian NOC that Egypt is now considered a safe delegation after reviewing its medical precautions and will not join the restricted category. Accordingly, Egypt no longer needs to be isolated for three days after arriving in Tokyo. We only need to just submit negative PCR tests for the whole delegation which we will be done with immediately before traveling,” Dr. Kamal added.
The whole delegation—officials and athletes—have all been vaccinated before traveling to the Olympic Games.
On Tuesday 13 July, the NOC revealed and displayed the official sports outfits to be donned by the Egyptian delegation at the Olympic Games.
Egypt made its first Olympic participation at the Olympic Games in 1912. Since then, the Egyptians had appeared in 21 editions of the Olympic Games, where they managed to win 31 different medals. It took Egypt 56 years to return to the Olympics medals’ table, which was at the Athens 2004 Games.

Weightlifting has won the most Olympic medals for Egypt, a total of 11 medals: five gold, two silver, and four bronze medals. Unfortunately, this figure would remain as it is with the absence of the Egyptian weightlifting champions. The sport has been suspended a year ago after some junior players tested positive for steroids. Though Egypt had appealed the verdict, the International Weightlifting Federation retained its decision and prevented Egypt’s two powerhouses of the sport, Mohamed Ihab and Sara Samir, winners of the bronze medals in the last edition in Rio, from taking part in the Games, thus losing Egypt’s two guaranteed medals in the sport.
Greco Wrestling won two medals: one gold in Athens 2004 and one silver in London 2012. In Tokyo, the stakes are high for Ibrahim Kisho in the men’s category and Samar Hamza in the women’s category.
Boxing has won four medals: one gold and three bronzes. Diving and judo, each won two medals: one silver and one bronze. Fencing received 2 silver medals: One won by Alaaeldin Abou El-kassem[PE1] . Taekwondo won 2 medals: One bronze in 2004 by Tamer Salah, and one bronze in 2016 by Hedaya Malak.
