Two Golds for Egyptian Teams

By: Inas Mazhar

March 09, 2021

Egypt’s men and women’s rugby teams each won the gold medals in their respective categories at the Arab Rugby Championships, which were held in February in Alexandria. The two championships were held at the pitches of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport.

While the men’s event celebrated its seventh edition, this was the inaugural edition for the women’s event. Impressively, both Egyptian teams clinched the gold medals of their respective championships.

Eight men’s teams took part in the men’s event including Sudan, the UAE, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Libya, and the host nation Egypt. The women’s event saw four teams participate, namely Lebanon, Syria, the UAE, and hosts Egypt who were making their first appearance in the women’s event. The Egyptian women’s team, created earlier this year, beat Syria for the title in the two-day event.

The men’s competition saw the host nation Egypt outclass Lebanon 14-0 for their second trophy after winning their first in the 2019 edition. This was the men’s team’s sixth participation at the Arab Championships, having taken part in five previous editions and claiming the title once before adding this year’s cup.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Rugby Federation is looking forward to the African qualifications scheduled to be held in October for both the men’s and women’s events. According to President of the Egyptian Federation Hossam Saheb, Egypt intends to apply for the bidding process to host the African Qualifications, a qualifier competition for the World Rugby Cup scheduled to take place in France next year.
